Svensk Form Strategy - focus Form and internationalisation

Vi fortsätter på den inslagna strategin med fokus på Form och internationalisering, konstaterade vi vid höstens inledande strategimöte igår med Svensk Forms styrelse, med vissa justeringar. Bra diskussioner och prioriteringar för 2012, som vi ska besluta om på dagens sammanträde. Vi har flera nya styrelseledamöter med nya kompetenser, vilket ger ännu fler infallsvinklar, även om några tyvärr inte kunde vara med igår. Kvällen avslutades med middag, och jag glömde förstås att fotografera, trots att jag lagt fram kameran! Alltid trevligt och nyttigt att ha lite mera tid tillsammans.

Medlemmarna i styrelsen är Erika Lagerbielke, ordförande, Anna Sjöberg och Ahnie Gottberg som regionalföreningarnas represententanter, Lotta Lundén, Anders Englund, Gunnar Ottosson, Pasi Välimaa, Jenny Lantz och nya för i år Mattias Bergman och Mattias Andersson. Mera info på Svensk Forms hemsida.

Form and International exchange still in focus for the coming years, with some explicit priorities for 2012, which we will decide about at today's meeting with the Svensk Form Board. We always start the fall with a prolonged strategy discussion with the board, which is very useful and also pleasant, since it gives a chance to get to know the new board members a bit better. I will try to remember to take a photo at today's board meeting.

Swedish Design is already starting to invade London

Tidigare har vi varit i några lifestyle magasin och Finacial Times samt The Evening Standard. The Guardian kommer att ha ett helt uppslag med Skandinavisk Design inför Swedish Design Goes London.
Några av de designer som är med är Folkform, Monica Förster, Thomas Bernstrand, Anna Kraitz, Simon Klenell och många fler. Totalt deltar ett femtiotal företag och enskilda designer i satsningen. Vi har också adopterat Ilka Suppanen som svensk för detta tillfälle, då vi ville ha en varm brasa att värma oss vid i ambassad-biblioteket, och han har ritat flera versioner av Kaasa för Iitala.

Coming very soon, our Swedish Design Goes London event, and the media is already catching on, thanks to our fantastic PR Ladies in London, Friends & Company, Belinda Fisher and Christine Samuelian. Latest entry in wallpaper and more to come in Financial Times, The Evening Standard and the Guardian. Well done Belinda and Christine! In all some fifty companies and designers will participate in the event. among them for example Folkform, Monica Förster, Thomas Bernstrand, Anna Kraitz, and Simon Klenell. We have also an espcecially adopted Swede Ilka Suppanen with his new version of the fireplace Kaasa for Iitala, since we both like him and want to have a fire to warm around in the Ambassador's Library.

Innovative Icelandic stamp design

Så smart, att använda nya Harpa för att kommunicera ny isländsk styrka ur alla aspekter, så även i den nya frimärksserien, som dessutom fåt originell paketering och egen grafisk design. Svårt att förklara, även om jag här lägger in en bild. Ett fragment från Olafur Eliassons snillrika fönsterfasad (fick förklarat för mig att han lagt flera år av studier för att få fram just den brytning med kristaller som ger de unika färgskiftningarna i glaset), i stort format 10 x 10 cm, vari man låtit några rutor i mitten bli 4 löstagbara frimärken. Kommer nog att bli ett unikt samlarobjekt framledes.

Excursion into Northwestern Iceland

Lördagen reste vi med ett propellerplan upp till nordvästra hörnet av Island och besökte en av landets största lantgårdar Thingeyrar med enorma jordegendomar, som idag lever mest på hästar. Dvs att föda upp, träna och försälja de färdiga hästarna till Norden, Tyskland, USA osv. En stor och imponerande strukturerad buisiness. Slogs som alla en första gång av sagolandskapet med de utsträckta vidderna, de dramatiska himlarna, islandshästarna, fåren, fälten. Våra värdar Ingimundur och Valgerdur Sigfússon, ägare av farmen gjorde vår resa oförglömlig.

Thanks to our wonderful hosts, we were given the opportunity to travel up to the Northwestern corner of Iceland, where they own a lot of land around one of the largest farms in Iceland Thingeyrar, where we were guided through the Icelandic sagas, to the Thingeyrar Monestary Church, to salmon fishing, and to the most fascinating of all, The Hore Farm, led by the Horse breeder and trainer Helga Thorodssen. An impressive undertaking and business to handle around 100 horses per year, to bring them up, feed them, train them and then to sell them around the world after some 5-6 years when they are ready. I was of course amazed by this saga landscape, with the dramatic skies, the sheep, the horses, the vast land with hardly no trees.

Harpa concert Hall in Reykjavik

Äntligen fick jag se den live, det omskrivna konserthuset Harpa i Reykjavik, med Ólafur Elíassons fantastiska glasfasad. Jag blev helt överväldigad. Hisnande upplevelse både inifrån och utifrån. Vi har ju skrivit om Harpa i Form redan, men text och bilder räcker inte måste upplevas. Talade med många här om det omöjliga projektet att genomdriva detta kostsamma projekt mitt i krisen, men de flesta var stolta och ansåg att det betydde mycket för att komma ur krisen.

It is really worth the visit, the newly inaugurated Harpa Reykjavik Concert Hall, designed by Danish architectural firm Henning Larsen Architects and Icelandic architectural firm Batteríið Architects. Henning Larsen Architects also made the Danish new Opera House. Most amazing however and magic are the glass facades by Danish-Icelandic artist Ólafur Elíasson. It made my trip. Here are some photos, but no photos can make justice to this experience.

Landed in Reykjavik for the first time in my life

Besöker Reykjavik för första gången i livet. Liknar inget annat i världen. Och vilka människor, starka på väg ut ur krisen, även om det är en bit kvar. Receptet verkar vara att gasa sig ur krisen, och det ser ut att lyckas! Även designområdet i stort lägger i överväxeln. Träffade deras unga kulturminister igår, Katrin Jakobsdottir, strax över 30 år med nyfödd son, som är Katrin med alla. Honberättade att de håller på med en ny designpolicy för Island. Med i styrelsen där jag sitter är också Finlands grand old man inom Design, industrimannen Krister Ahlström, han berättade att även Finland håller på med en ny designpolicy. När kommer Sverige?

Met with the young and promising Icelandic Cultural Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir, around 35 years of age, and learned that they are working on a new Design Policy for Iceland. Also the Finns are starting to work on a new Design Policy. And a couple of days ago I wrote about the new Danish report and visions, following the evaluation of their design policy a few years ago. Sweden is falling behind in this race I'm afraid. Anyway, I am on my first visit to Iceland and Reykjavik - not like anything else I have seen. Amazing.

The say that the sky is never blue, and that there are no trees in Iceland, I guess we were lucky. We were told however that the city has changed a lot recently - lots of new trees and lots of new tourists

Creative wedding in Hagaparken

Den sista soliga sommarhelgen i augusti var jag bjuden på bröllop i Hagaparken. Min medarbetare Richard Prime - som jobbar med att bygga upp vår nya engelska designdatabas samt webb och katalog inför Swedish Design Goes London - gifte sig med sin Frida Jeppsson. Ceremonin ägde rum mitt i parken med familj och vänner, Fridas syster var vigselförättare. På det glada 70-talet när man hade alternativa och konstnärliga bröllop var alla barfota, skäggiga och likadant klädda. Nu klär alla upp sig, men på sitt eget sätt och ingen verkar rädd att sticka ut. Noterade särskilt kreativiteten i de olika hattarna. Varmt, glatt och kärleksfullt. Grattis Frida och Richard!

Many playful hats and creative outfits were spotted in Hagaparken when Richard Prime, my collaborator at Svensk Form, married Frida Jeppsson, editor of Rum, on Saturday August 27. The version of a free marriage style 2011, far from the alternative weddings of the 70's when I grew up, where everyone had to look the same, barefoot and in sweaters and long dresses. Today you are allowed to dress up, but in your own way. Liberating and fun. Congratulations Frida and Richard

I, and many with me have waited for a long time for a smart solution to the ugly and uncomfortable helmets!! The prestigious INDEX award was given to 5 winners out of 1000 nominations, only one from Europe: Hövding. The others came from Chile, India, Korea and USA/Mexico.

Current project? I’m working on ”the desk project” we take photos of different professionals' office desks, in 12 countries, over 5 continents, to study what the objects tell about the individuals, their need to express themselves. We notice great variety in different business sectors in the different cultures, however when it comes to gender, the stereotypes come through in a striking way across cultures.

Current passion? Perceiving and observing everyday life. How do people move, how do they handle objects. What moves people? I can’t stop observing, on holidays or at work. I guess you can call it a passion.

(I have a nice little film from Uta answering this question, with lively gestures, but it was too heavy for the blog, I hope to resolve this tool soon)

Your next move? How can you transform all these observations above into smart design. What can we learn from this? How can we achieve sensitive design, allowing individual needs in combination with the befenit for the collective. Improve the design and accept peoples’ needs.

What is Swedish Design to you? The design group Front, I like their work.

Your greatest strength? Curiosity

Your greatest motivation? To try to convince people and make them enthusiastic for changes for the better.

Your greatest weakness? I’m too direct and overwhelming to some people. I guess my students either like me a lot or not at all. Nothing in between.

Eftersom jag reser så mycket och träffar intressanta yrkesverksamma inom design, kommer jag från och med nu att göra små snabba miniintervjuer med spännande människor som jag möter. Började idag i Hamburg. Först ut Designhistorikern och teoretikern Michael Erlhoff, som var en av de inbjudna talarna i designseminariet Design S-tag, samt hans partner, Uta Brandes, tillika professor och designforskare.

Hamburg in rain

Fantastiskt värdskap av honorärkonsuln Leif A. Larsson i privata Hafen Klub intill Elbefloden igår kväll. Leif är Vansbro-karl, så honom har jag förstås ett extra gott öga till, heja Dalarna! Elegant och god fyrarättersmiddag till Design S-tags ära med 16 arrangörer och talare. Sprudlande Birgit Kassovic, som arrangerat allt från början tillsammans med Helena Wallander från Tocado PR, och alla andra involverade. Flera bekanta från invigningen av Design S på Folkerkunde-museet 2008. Bland annat den spännande professorn Michael Erlhoff, som kommer att dela med sig av intressanta nya funderingar idag. Tyvärr hade jag bara min nya iPhone 4-kamera med mig igår, och det kändes lite påträngande att fota för mycket. Birgit kommer med desto fler bilder som ni får se sen.

Arrived yesterday with Oscar Magnusson in pooring rain. He will speak about Design & Marketing: How to inline sustainable design strategies with your overall corporate strategy. After checking in at our Stella Maris hotel by the harbour, we went to the generous and elegant dinner hosted by the Swedish Honorary Consul Leif A. Larsson for the speakers and organizers of the Design S-tag. He has been very generous in sponsoring a great deal of the realization of the Design S-tag and exhibition tour here. Today we will enjoy the full day seminar. I also look very much forward to see the actual exhibition in Europa Passage this afternoon. I also look forward to listen to the new thoughts by brilliant professor Michael Erlhoff, whom I got to know during a seminar in 2008 here in Hamburg.

Getting ready for Hamburg and Design S in Europa Passage

Nu tar jag tre dagar ledigt från semestern och åker till Hamburg - med mellanlandning på kontoret på Skeppsholmen - för att delta i ett designseminarium. Design S-tag hålls i samband med att Design S - utställningen vandrat vidare till det tredje av fem stora shopping centers i Hamburg, EDE, ägt av Otto Group. Företaget har valt visa Design S under tre månader i samband med att Hamburg firar European Green Capital 2011, och varuhuskedjan har också tillsatt ett eget advisory board kring hållbarhetsfrågor. Jag misstänker också att energiska och effektiva designentusiasterna Birgit Kassovic och hennes kollega Helena Wallander på Tocado PR, som sköter hela Tysklandssatsningen kring Design S, har varit bra på att övertala dem. Allt har skötts förebildligt och ambitiöst med egen tysk katalog, broschyrer och nu alltså ett heldagsseminarium kring design.

"Sustainable design with the user in focus" is the title of my short lecture on Swedish design, which I will give on Friday in Hamburg at the Chamber of Commerce Hamburg, in connection with the Design S exhibition in the ECE shopping center Europa Passage. It is the third out of five venues in Hamburg where the exhibition will tour for three months. The media coverage has been massive, and I will find out more about how the public has reacted when I meet the fantastic organizers Birgit Kassovic and Helena Wallander of Tocado PR. Ever since we showed the previous issue of Design S in Hamburg in 2008, they have been following Swedish design enthusiastically and worked so hard to realize this tour. They have even published a new catalogue, broschures and we are really impressed. This means that I take a short break from my vacation, and on Saturday I return to a full summer house of children and grand children. Quite a nice mix of life styles actually.

With exhibitions, seminars, talks and several producers and designers, Swedish design will be very visible in the British capital in September 2011.

With this exhibition we wish to share the vital diversity and playfulness which is characteristic of Swedish design today, far from the common perception of Swedish design as merely blonde and restrained. We want the visitors to feel at home and take part of an informal everyday lifestyle. With the talks we hope to deepen the relations with our British friends, to discuss common topics within design and architecture, and to show the strength of Swedish design industry.

To start with, the Ambassador of Sweden will exclusively open up her Residence at Portland Place for a Swedish design exhibition: Hemma (the Swedish word for home). The magnificent 18^th century architecture of Robert and James Adam will shed a new light on the contemporary shapes ofdesign for one of the first events during the Design Festival.

A series of Library talks will be hosted in the the Residence throughout the exhibition period, examining the key issues affecting Swedish design and architecture today, while also looking at differences and similarities of Sweden and Britain's design culture. The visitors can enjoy flavours of Sweden in the concept Fika with... while having the chance to engage intimately in conversation with some of the most important designers, companies, architects and pioneers working in Sweden today.

Over at Designersblock, the 31 young Swedish designers currently showing as part of the touring exhibition ung8 will add their own set of influences, colours and shape to one of the Festival's must-sees. Ung is the Swedish word for youth and also the name of a recurrent, juried exhibition with designers born in 1979 or later. Prototypes, concepts and innovative design solutions with the ability to shape the future and create a stir are selected for this exhibition.

At Skandium store in Kensington, a unique retrospective by the trio Claesson Koivisto Rune will be on show, tracing the progression of one of Sweden's most infamous multi-disciplinarians from their emergence to today's intelligent, witty take on design and architecture.

Ta helst flera timmar på dig för att se James Turells storslagna ljusinstallationer med tillhörande utställningar om Hilma af Klint och Rudolf Steiner som pågår i Järna just nu. See Colour. Och du blir inte besviken. Jag hade visserligen bara en dryg timme när jag slank in med min kompis Aia i lördags, och vi klämde dessutom in en fika på Saltåkvarn, som ligger precis intill. Men jag ska tillbaka, var så säker, då jag har mycket kvar och vårt sommarhus inte ligger långt därifrån. Barnbarnen ska få följa med, det blir en fin skattjakt, genom det idylliska sörmländska landskapet, den antroposofiska arkitekturen av Erik "Abbi" Asmussen, byggt på färgschema av Fritz Fuchs med sina humanistiska färger och former som alltid finns där, och nu med tillägget av amerikanske konstnären James Turells hisnande färg- och ljusinstallationer. Tyvärr kunde jag inte fota allt, jag kan bara rekommendera en sommarutflykt bara en timme från Stockholm med bil E 4 söderut, sväng av mot Järna på väg 57, eller ta pendeltåget till Järna.

If you have a chance, try to take an extra tour to Järna, one hour south of Stockholm, to see the spectacular light installation by James Turell and accompanying exhibitions on view until October 2nd. See Colour is the name covering 4 different exhibitions spread over the Järna campus with unique mild and gentle architecture melting in with the nature by Erik "Abbi" Asmussen created through a colour scheme by Fritz Fuchs. The world famous American Artist James Turell, specialized on light, colour and space, has created some unique and quite spectacular premanent installations for Järna, including a special Skyspace, a Dark Space, a Tall Glass and walk-in-colour sculpture. Amazing - but not possible to photograph, so you just have to come and see by yourself. There are also experimental colour phenomenas in the garden built on old Goete theories, work shops you can try yourself. The more symbolic colour paintings by Swedish female modernist artist Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) are also featured in a separate exhibition. Hade trevligt möte med Jonas Hornblad, som är en driven webb designer som kan både den hårda och mjuka delen och har hjälpt oss med andra webbplatser. Ska träna under sommaren, över till wordpress och renare layout för att underlätta.

Seems like a massive shift over to wordpress as a tool for web and blog users. Even big institutions, like the White House appearently, uses wordpress. With the help of Jonas Hornblad, I will also make the necessary move over with my Fru Form blog, to make it easier and clearer for you readers. Hopefully. I will use this calmer summer period to practize. I'm not really a wiz, but thanks to good help I will try. Our digital communication is becoming increasingly important in the contact with our members and friends all over the world besides the actual magazine Form.

Fotografiska har verkligen lyckats dra mängder av publik. Slog ned pålarna i Stockholmsscenen precis rätt i tiden. Intresset för foto och fotokonsten ökar lavinartat, Stockholmarna i mellangenerationen behöver ett ställe att hänga på. Konceptet genialiskt, bra jobbat, även om flera finkultursrepresentanter rynkar på näsan. Även turister från andra länder och landsbygd har sökt sig dit. Slank in där i torsdags, mitt på eftermiddagen efter ett möte. Var tvungen att se Robert Mapplethorpe igen, eftersom jag just läst Patti Smith's fängslande memoarbok. Fyllt av människor. De har över 108.000 vänner på Facebook till exempel.

Don't miss the ongoing large retrospective photo exhibition by Robert Mapplethorpe at Fotografiska which goes on until October 2nd. I have seen many of these photos before, at Moderna some years ago, and also in New York, but after having read Patti Smiths beautiful memoars from their first searching years as artists in New York, Just Kids, it gave the show a whole new dimension. I cannot but admire the work of the founders of Fotografiska in Stockholm, having succeeded in getting a full house in all ways - audience, media acclaim and attention, venue for corporate events, courses, hangout for young moms and young and trendy wishing to approach art - through photography. Well done. I happened to bicycle by the other day in the midst of the day and it was full of people.

Juli jobb i slow motion

Märker att jag börjar jobba i slow motion, trots att jag har så mycket jag vill ha klart före semestern. Jag brukar älska att jobba i juli, man kan få så mycket gjort. Telefonerna ringer inte, epostkorgen är nästan hanterlig, brådskan och bränderna som ska släckas är färre. Men nu går det lite trögt, värme, säkert trött också efter en slitig vår. Hursomhelst går jag inte till riktig semester förrän i augusti, när min till stor del utlandsbosatta familj börjar strömma in. När alla andra kommer igång, då kryper jag ner i sjön. Men jag har i alla fall lyckan att kunna pendla om jag vill. Landet ligger en dryg timme från Stockholm och jag kunde börja morgonen med att klyva den svarta vattenytan i insjön med några simtag, innan jag tog pendeln in till stan. Ska inte klaga.

Every year I am amazed at how everthing slows down in Sweden in July, and stops completely at the end of the month - the peak of the summer vacation period here. As a contrast to the extremely busy period at the end of June, when everybody tries to finish up before vacation. Even we, Svensk Form, will close for two weeks. Since large part of our family lives abroad, I will take my main vacation in August. Right now I am lucky to work without the telephone ringing, fewer emails but yet piles of papers, applications and reports to finish. Lucky as I am, I can commute between our summerhouse and work every day if I wish. This morning, I started with a swim in our black lake before taking the train of one hour to Stockholm. I cannot complain. Will probably be slow with my blog during the summer.

Design S öppnar i dag i Hamburg

Färska bilder har just anlänt från Hamburg och vår Design S-utställning som öppnar där i dag i Billstedt-Center, shoppingcenter i Hamburg, och sedan turnerar vidare till ytterligare fyra större shopping malls runtom i Hamburg, allt arrangerat av våra svenskättade Sverigeentusiastier och skickliga PR-kvinnor Birgit Kassovic och Helena Wallaner från Tocado PR i Hamburg. Birgit jobbade tidigare på svenska generalkonsulatet i Hamburg innan det lades ned, och som en av de sista större evenemangen var att arrangera Design S förra omgången, med seminarier osv. Intresset blev så stort, så Birgit och hennes kollega Helena beslöt att ta framgångskonceptet vidare. Invigningsceremoni med honoräre generalkonsuln, potentater från galleriorna, musik och mat. Our National Design Award, Design S exhibition, is now touring around in 5 the prestigious shopping malls ECE-center in Hamburg from July to September Great opening yesterday in the Billstedt-Center yesterday, with official opening with the Swedish Honorary Consul General and directors of the center. The initiative was taken by our Swedish power ladies in Hamburg, Ms Birgit Kassovic and her colleague Helena Wallander of Tocado PR. Really exemplary work in all senses, printed broschures, catalogues and already masses of media attention. Thank you Berit and Helena! For över till London häromdagen för pressfotografering i ambassadörsresidenset inför vår svenska höstsatsning under London Design Festival, där vi nu är officiell partner och lägger upp våra programpunkter efterhand. SWEDISH DESIGN GOES LONDON är huvudrubriken för hela satsningen, som är ett samarbete mellan Svenska institutet, Exportrådet och Ambassaden i London och Svensk Form. Satsningen är tredelad: ung8 som visas på Designer' Block, HEMMA: Swedish Design Goes London at the Residence, en utställning med företag och designer i ambassadörens residens, där vi också kommer att hålla LIBRARY TALKS, samtal i Forms regi om aktuella ämnen inom design och arkitektur riktade till branschen och initierade, samt FIKA och miniföreläsningar om svensk och brittisk design till allmänheten. Invigning på residenset startar redan den 15 september, och håller sedan öppet även för allmänheten på eftermiddagar och helger. Ung8 invigs den 21 september på Designers Block, och allt avslutas helgen 24-25 september. Just i dag är vår projektledare Annika Björman, tillsammans med arkitekten Horst Petri (som gjorde vår uppmärksammande gestaltning i Milano tillsammans med Victor Peters för No Picnics räkning) De ska kolla eluttag, upphängningsanordningar, ta mått osv för att se hur vi på smartast sätt ska klara av den sökta kontrasten med residensets 1700-talsarkitekture i utsökt och spänninsfyllt möte med den nya designen. Det kan bli hur bra som helst - vi bygger upp interna teman i lokalerna utifrån Eat, Meet, Mingle & Work. Engagemanget stort och lovande från alla håll, och jättebra PR-byrå redan med full fart i London.

HEMMA: Swedish Design Goes London at the residence is the name of the design exhibition we are preparing to show in the Swedish Ambassador's residence in London on September 15-25, during London Design Festival. I popped over last week to assist a photo shoot with some of the design brands and objects that we will include in the show. The purpose is to invite the audience into a feeling of informal contemporary life style, where you can use and enjoy the various areas, such as Eat, Meet, Mingle & Work, which we will create as environments where the new design contrasts and is juxta positioned to the classic 18th-century architecture by the respectable architects Robert and James Adam. The photo shoot went very well with our efficient and clever PR agent Belinda Fisher and a really nice photographer. It made the work so smooth and positive togeheter with the staff from the Embassy. The feel good factor is there for sure. Im sure it will be a great event. Annika Björkman, our project manager from Svensk Form, flew over today together with architect Horst Petri, who helped us in Milan, to check out the local conditions further with their practical and creative minds on alert. Beckmans skola öppnar upp en akademi

Undrar just hur många anmälningar de fått in. Ett mycket ambitiöst program är upplagt, för kurser med olika inspirerande föreläsare och i olika form- och designdiscipliner. www.beckmans.se/akademin Jag skulle gärna gå själv på flera av dem, som till exempel hos Eric Ericson, Martin Bergström, Anna Kraitz, Stefania Malmsten för att nämna några. Men vem har råd, eller är beredd, att betala avgiften? Den stort uppslagna och attraktiva kursbroschyren i XL-format har i alla fall gått ut i stort och påkostat utskick, jag har fått flera ex till arbetet och även hemma i brevlådan. Kanske många med mig på öfvre östermalm är en tänkt målgrupp, eller våra barn. Hoppas det fungerar, lovvärt initiativ. Men min erfarenhet av designkåren är att betalningsberedskapen - eller förmågan - är begränsad.

Beckmans' School of Design has just launched an ambitious series of courses for the general public with some of their most inspiring teachers and lecturers. I would like to take several of them myself, although I hesitate when I see the cost. Probably realistic, but within the design field here in Sweden, we are quite spoiled, and expect most events and seminars in our area to be free. Are we ready for a change?

Kulturevolution i Boda med museum och saluhall för glas

Grattis till driftiga och dynamiska Anders Färdig, VD för Design House Stockholm som tillsammans med Emmaboda Kommun drivit fram det ambitiösa och storslagna projektet The Glass Factory i Boda, i gamla glasrikets hjärta, där konstglaset blomstrade på 50-60-70-talet. Var på väg ner till öppningen den 18 juni, men fick förhinder. Nu har Design House Stockhlm gjort en tidning som berättar om hela utvecklingen i Boda till dagens stora satsning, en saga om hjältar och hjältinnor som skapat något unikt i svensk kulturhistoria. Ett centrum för glas, form och design, en satsning i tre delar: museet The Glass Factory och OPEN, en saluhall för desing, och en studioglashytta Vet Hut. The Kingdom of Crystal in Småland is well known as a tourist destination of Sweden. Despite the last turbulent years within the glass industry, with the loss of glass studios and small factories, the risk of loosing skill, craft, quality and tradition. Thank good the Municipality of Emmaboda has decided to rescue over 30 000 glass pieces of the historiacal collection of the Kosta, Boda and Åfors glassworks. And now, the municipality, together with the strong driving force, engagement and determination Anders Färdig, CEO of Design House Stockholm, have opened up a new center for glass and design in Boda, the village that was the center of art glass revolution in the 50's, where many of our most talented artists opened the doors. The new center was inaugurated on June 18th, which I missed, but luckily Design House Stockholm has given out a lively paper telling the stories behind Boda and the new center. Offeccts eget pris till ung lovande arkitekturstudent från Italien

Trots att många redan börjat smita iväg till midsommarfirande, kom det ganska många sommarklädda och glada gäster till Offeccts årliga prisutdelning. Eftersom arkitekterna är så viktiga för att skapa helheten kring all design, förklarade designchefen Anders Englund, ville Offecct instifta ett pris som premierar nästa generations arkitekter från KTH. Kurt Tingdal berättade om företagets filosofi under 21 framgångsrika år, och att de alltid arbetar med olika formgivare, men både syr och tillverkar en stor del i Sverige för att ha kontroll över hela produktionen, och att begreppet hållbar inte bara är tomma ord hos företaget. I år gick priset med 10.000 SEK och ett diplom, samt äran till en ung italienska, Valentina Soana som studerar vid KTH, för ett mycket intrikat system av organisaka former som är ett förslag som är tänkt att draperar gamla klassiska byggnader.

The Offecct Prize has been established in order to reward a young promising architectural student at the School of Architecture at KTH, Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, since the company Offecct wishes to promote the next generation of architects. The jury, headed by Thomas Sandel together with Jannice Johansson of Tengbom, Mark Isitt and Anna Pang, this year decided to give the Prize to a young Italian student, Valentina Soana for her project Ornamental Hypertrophy. See her own explaination below.

”The proposal ”Ornamental Hypertrophy” is a challenging and inspiring project. It reconsiders the traditional architectural concepts such as ornamentation, geometry and space, and the presentation material deftly conveys a vision of an enchanting architecture. The project’s location and program is an expansion of an existing structure in San Lorenzo in Rome. The new building serves as an art center and is an extremely complex spatial and physical design. Like an organism with a colored surface, it moves between, in and around the existing buildings. With full control over the situation, the tools and the creations, the creator created qualities that challenge and discuss what architecture can be.

Juni är konferensernas tid. Stimulerande och effektivt att sitta en hel eftermiddag och diskutera ett enda ämne: Forms kommersiella utveckling, med styrelsen i vårt nybildade bolag Mandelgren Magazine AB. Summera första halvåret, titta på alla siffror och blicka framåt. Härligt att vi kunde vara hemma hos våra andra delägare Provisa, Christina och Staffan Lund, som bor invid vattnet på Lidingö. Att sitta och njuta av naturen och samtidigt planera. Vår viktigaste uppgift är att se hur vi kan göra Form till en lönsam tidning, hur vi kan attrahera fler läsare/prenumeranter, fler annonsörer och nå ut bredare internationellt. Tiden och budgeten är tajt, engagemanget och arbetsviljan stor, utmaningarna många, men nu har vi lagt mera resurser och kraft på Form än någonsin. Vid dagens slut kände vi oss peppade och på väg. Givande när alla kompetenser kan paras ihop.

Så gott som varje vecka får vi internationellt besök på Skeppsholmen, sitter just och räknar statistik på hur många exakt under 2010 och hittills 2011. Intresset för svensk design, inklusive den svenska designhistorien är imponerande stort och växer hela tiden. Vi koncentrerar ju numera våra mesta resurser just på internationaliseringen som innebär både att ta svensk design ut i världen, och världen till oss. Senaste besöket kom från Thailand, en delegation som följde med den stora thailändska festivalen i Stockholm, och just våra besökare arbetar med att stödja thailändskt hantverk och konsthantverk, och se hur den kan möta industrin och använda design i processutvecklingen. Vi har haft många möten med thailändska företrädare under åren, och de har tagit emot många av våra turnerande utställningar.

How to support development of the local Thai arts and crafts, is one of the missions of the Gallery Manager Kesada Srisawasdi from Thailand, who came with her colleagues and an Embassy representative to visit us the other day. How to match the craftsmen and skills with the industry and industrial production, and how to use design as a tool of development in this process. The purpose of the visit was to see how we have worked with these issues in our history and in present days, if there is any ways of continued cooperation. We have been happy to meet many Thai representatives of craft and design throughout the years, and we have also shown Swedish Design Exhibitions at the TCDC in Bangkok for example. Every week we receive interesting international visits at our offices, a good way to extend our international relations and collaborations.

Glädjande många designnyheter

Vet inte om det är jag som inbillar mig, men det verkar ändå som om media återupptagit bevakning av design igen efter senaste årens design fatigue. Bara i veckan som gick med såväl fin DN-recension av Malin Vessby om Per B Sundbergs utställning i Gustavsberg, tisdagmorgonens Kulturnytt i radio där Måns Hirschfeldt gjorde ett långt inlägg om Petter Eklunds nya bok Formsagor. (Särskilt glädjande för oss på Svensk Form och Form, eftersom vi Petter är en flitig samarbetspartner i Form och vi just givit honom Lennart Lindqvists stipendium om 25.000 SEK. Får anledning att återkomma snart till detta). I onsdagens DN berättade man till och med om viktiga kulturhändelser i världen och den stora designutställningen som öppnade i konstmuseet i San Franciscos flygterminal igår "The enduring designs of Josef Frank" som sedan ska vidare till Seattle, Minneapolis och Washington.

I sin nya bok Formsagor samlar Petter Eklund en rad texter om svenska formgivare, företrädesvis inom keramik- och porslinsindustrin.

Nya nordiska landskap och konsthantverk på Arkitekturmuseet

Den 15 juni öppnade Arkitekturmuseets stora sommarutställning Man Made Environment, och på tisdag den 21 juni öppnar nästa, Konsthantverkarnas 60-årsjubileumsutställning Signerat. Bra fart! Synd för mig att jag missar båda öppningarna, men jag hann i alla fall slinka in på pressvisningen av Man Made Environment och fick intressant inblick i ett par av de svenska projekteten: Väg 73 och Vasaparkens förändring. Utställningen är producerad av Dansk Arkitektur Center och Norsk Form - i samverkan med de nordiska kollegorna. Ovanligt att se en utställning med inslag från hela Norden, även det förstås inte är så lättillgängligt att visa stora landskapsprojekt i musei-miljö. Trots en svävande gestaltning som tar hela stora rummet i anspråk, är det många texter och stora krav som ställa på besökarna som ska orka ta sig in i de olika projekten. Skulle gärna ha önskat att få gå in mera på djupet i några få. Önskar att alla kunde få lyssna till de inspirerande landskapsarkitekterna som vi fick höra på pressvisningen, Elisabeth Rosenqvist Saidac huvudarkitkt Rambäll för Väg 73 och Anders från Grontmijs landskapsarkitekter. This summer, the visitors of the Museum of Architecture in Stockholm can enjoy both architecture and design in two exhibitions opening within one week. A broad Nordic exhibition on sustainable landscape Architecture opened this week, and a Swedish Craft Exhibition, Konsthantverkarna, celebrating 60 years will open on June 21. The catalogue "New Nordic Scopes" is written in English and is not only presenting the projects in the show, but also works as an interesting overview with different Nordic voices expressing their views on how the new landscape can cope with the future challenges and sustainable development.

Always sad to say goodbye, especially to someone like Elisabeth Blomdin who has worked for so many years for Svensk Form, looking after our members and handling the subscriptions. Workshop på Nacka Strand om ny webbplats för samtida design

Härligt att ta båten ut till Nacka Strand i försommarvärmen för en heldagsworkshop. (Jag tog visserligen svettiga bussen ut, men åtminstone båten tillbaka). 6 personer mixat Svensk Form och Centrum för Näringslivshistoria, tillsammans en hel dag kring ett enda projekt. Vilken lyx! Fruktbart och angeläget nu inför starten av vår nya webb i december, som ska ge en bred och öppen genomlysning av samtida svensk design; designer, företag, produkter, tjänster, koncept... Får anledning att snart komma tillbaka till detta.

What we really feel is still missing, is a good overview in English over contemporary Swedish Design. That is why we are now about to create a new open source web site featuring current Swedish designers, companies and products. It is a collaboration between Svensk Form and Centrum för Näringslivshistoria, and thus will not only a tool for the present users and readers, but also available for future references and research. The first page is planned for launch in December this year. Richard Prime, already an initiated blogger / writer within the design, fashion and trend field. His passion for contemporary Swedish design will come in handy for this project and we are very happy to work with Richard. Who, by the way, is one of the few English natives who has learnt to speak Swedish in only two years here, despite all of us automatically addressing him in English with him.

Trots den varma sommarkvällen, letade sig ett hundratal ner i mörka nattklubbskällaren på Berns för att lyssna till kvällens spännande talare och bläddra i senaste numret av Form. Slumpen gjorde att poesin och kärleken till naturen och materialen löpte som en röd tråd genom kvällen. Det blev också en tidstypisk resa mellan internationella influenser och nationaliteter. Vi for från industri i Tjeckien, till indisk byggteknik och unga italienska och tyska formgivare som vurmade för svenska nedfällda almar. Kvällen avslutades i en kulturellt möte i en koreansk-svensk bokstavsmix fylld av värme som inte lämnade någon oberörd. Talarna var Folkform, Karin Wiberg, Lies-Marie Hoffman, Carlotta Trevisan, Karin Frankenstein, Kyuhyung Cho.
En av våra finaste PechaKuchakvällar, om man nu överhuvudtaget kan jämföra dem, då de alla sinsemellan blir helt olika. Det här var vår 28:e omgång, och vi står ständigt i kontakt med grundarna i Tokyo, Klein-Dytham Architects, som också inom PechaKuchas nätverk nu gör en insamling Inspire Japan i samarbete med Architects For Humanity. Nowadays we always combine the launch of latest Form magazine issue with our PechaKucha nights at Berns in Stockholm. This night we started out by presenting our cover girls Folkform, and their passion for industrial production and inspiring glass making journey in Czech factories. The result can be seen currently at Färgfabriken. This was our 28th PechaKucha, which turned out to become a really poetic night, with lots of love for nature and materials and a beautiful crosscultural mix. The evening ended by a unique presentation by young Korean graphic designer, Kyuhyung Cho who had created a series of new pictograph fonts, as images and letters at the same time, thus creating wonderful stories and images. This was his masters' work at Konstfack, where he gratuated this year and was awarded with three different scholarships. It was magic to experience live.

Italian designer Carlotta Trevisan, works at present at NoPicnic in Stockholm, and has also a love for the Swedish Elm trees, and together with her Italian colleague Leo Salzedo at NoPicnic they prepared a set of playful swings for the Swedish Love Stories event in Milan in April. However somewhere in the end of the event, the green swing got lost. Now Carlotta wondered what happened to it.

Karin Frankenstein talked on the importance of Cow Dung, and how she has studied old building techniques in India and in Sweden, and with time has created her own unique material including paper and cow dung and others, which she shapes into her new objects, from collectors' clocks to mass production tiles.

At the end of the evening, Korean Graphic Designer Kyuhung Cho, was allowed to make an alternative PechaKucha, not following the exact format, since he had to demonstrate to us live, how to type up different variation of his self made pictograph fonts (his exam work at Konstfack) and how it left the boring meaning of direkt letters, into pictorial and symbolic images filled with associations, meaning and love

With his third font, based on Swedish flowers and nature, he typed out a love letter for his teacher Lea, which she had recieved from her deseased husband in earlier days. Kyu made her a wall paper of her love letter, so that she can always be surrounded by her husband's love.

In the end of the evening, the audience could type and print their own texts directly on Kyu's computer, which he gladly signed and gave away. I have my own version at home.

Har inte kunnat göra inlägg i min blogg på en hel vecka, på grund av tekniska problem, som nu verkar ha löst sig. Fyller på i efterskott och efterhand. Funderar nu på att byta verktyg, men med samma namn Fru Form, och göra om designen så att det blir lättare för er läsare, med kortare texter och en enda öppningsbild per inlägg, så att ni kan välja vad som intresserar er.

Sorry I've been having technical problems with my blog for a week, not able to put in any new entries. Now it seems to be repaired so I will catch up as I go along. I will also work on a new solution, with better design, in order to make it easer for you readers. Will be back soon!

Kultur för en bättre värld

Nu finns faktiskt 100 sökbara miljoner för kultur i Sverige, tack vare Postkodlotteriets initiativ till en stiftelse för Kultur för en bättre värld. Stiftelsen startade 2009, och pengar går redan till några vällovliga projekt såsom Clowner Utan Gränser, El Sistema och Palatset. Syftet är att stödja kultur som bidrar till förbättrade levnadsvillkor. Och mer kan det bli, årligen. Pengarna ska stödja kultur med tydliga sociala mål. Stiftelsen manifesterades storslaget med en helkväll på Operan med inbjudna just från kultursektorn, näringssektorn och deltagare från den stora miljökonferensen som hållits i Stockholm med nobelpristagare dagarna innan. Massor av människor, generöst med mingel, mat och dryck och ett påkostat program. Högt och lågt. Med allt från körsång, till solosång av magiska Melody Gardot, paneldebatt och intressant samtal med Nadine Gordimer. Allt suveränt lett av charmiga Johanna Koljonen. Kvällens huvudnummer Bill Clinton, var tyvärr något av en besvikelse. Han började yrvaket, och släpptes sen iväg på en alldeles för långrandig resa, om än insiktsfull, om världens klimatproblem. Han trodde nog att han var på en miljökonferens, och inte på en kulturkväll på Operan. Han nappade inte ens på värdens, Niclas Kjellström-Matseke, ledande frågor om kulturens betydelse. Nu är jag dessvärre inte kär i Clinton längre!!

One real challenge for foundation for culture by Postkodlotteriet (the postal code lottery??) will be to find projects with sufficiently high artistic quality, and not only to those which have merely a strong social mission. 100 000 000 Swedish Crowns will be distributed yearly in support of culture with social aims. We really welcome this initiative, since we are desperately lacking private sponsorship for culture in Sweden. We want to see much more of this! Congratulations and thanks to Postkodlottteriet.

Spännade besök i nationalmuseets lager ute på landsbygden. Tredje och sista dagen av vårt studiebesök. Vi ska få se föremål som ingick i den nyligen avslutade utställningen We want to be modern, om polsk design 1955-1968, mest möbler, keramik, textil och grafisk design. Där också Miska Miller-Lovegrove varit involverad. Det skulle vara fint att kunna visa i Sverige inte bara den samtida designen, utan delar av den historiska, ändå från 1918 då Polen blev självständigt och konstnärer, formgivare och intellektuella följde Europas övriga Arts and Crafts' movement, och utvecklade en egen akademi parallellt med Bauhaus - Wad elle egentligen LAD med polskt genombrutet L, ett mångbottnat ord som betyder harmoni och ordning och vacker i ett och samma ord. Rörelsen manifesterades i möbler, textil, keramik och målet var objekt som skulle fungera för vardagsbruk, med förnämligt hantverk - vackrare vardagsvara helt enkelt. Naturligtvis uppstod ett stort brott under kriget, nazismen, utbombning, och sedan kommunismens övertagande. Men under 50-60-talen finns en utveckling av just glas, keramik, möbler och textil med anmärkningsvärt många starka svenska kvinnor som vore intressant att lära mer om här i Sverige. Lärde oss också att den första svenska designutställningen visades i Polen 1936 på Institution for promotion of the arts, som fick stark påverkan på den polska designutvecklingen. Kan den ha skapats inom Svenska Slöjdföreningen, måste ta reda på, eller var det Nationalmuseum? Och sedan visades 1939 WAD-kooperativet en utställning i Stockholm 1939 på Liljevalchs tydligen.

We had the most exciting excursion out the country side to visit the storage of the National Museum. Mostly to see the objects of textile, furniture and ceramics that were included in the exhibition We Want To Be Modern, which was recently on show out of the extensive collection under the name the Centre of Modern Design of the National Museum in Warsaw, which was created in 1979. Curator Anna Frackiewicz gave us the best tou, so full of knowledge, intelligence and sensitivity. It was a real history lesson for Cathrine and me, and it would be very interesting if we could show some part of this to the Swedish public, in connection with showing the contemporary movements. At least the graphic design part, which is so strong and still such a vital element within Polish design. This was our last day, and now we hope to come back soon again, perhaps to the Lodz Design Festival in October. Also we hope that we can welcome Polish design and designers to Stockholm for the Design Week in February 2012.
